Obituary for Herman Kuailani

Herman “Makaio” Kuailani, 81

Herman “Makaio” Kuailani of Haiku, Maui, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on February 12, 2021, in Wailuku, Maui.

He is predeceased by his lifetime sweetheart, May “Aunty Lei” Ishiki; parents, Simeon Paul Kuailani and Imi Honokaupu; sister, Violet (Joseph-deceased) Poowahi.

Herman is survived by his brothers, Sam (Bella-deceased), George; sisters, Frances (Joseph-deceased) Kahalehoe, Laura Afoka, Kehau Kuailani, Linda (Jim) Kaneopua; caregivers, Tony and Annette Golis; numerous nieces and nephews. Uncle Kaio worked in the construction industry as a mason for many years. He also worked alongside Ken Romkee building waterfalls throughout Maui. In his spare time, Uncle Kaio enjoyed doing arts and crafts with his primary focus on making lauhala hats and feather leis. He loved taking daily walks in Haiku and frequented Fukushima Store for their famous hot dogs. Uncle Kaio was known to have strong hands and often gave family and friends massages to help ease their aches and pains. He was a man full of knowledge and loved talking stories about the olden days. Uncle Kaio will be missed dearly for his hearty laugh and the Aloha Spirit that he possessed and shared with all who knew him.

Due to COVID-19 restriction, a public drive-thru viewing will be held on March 13, 2021 from 10:30am to 12:30pm at Ballard Family Mortuary, Kahului, Mau. Masks are required.
